![]() The new JD flat disks are just another marketing gimick. There are other things I would do, but you would have to talk more about the conditions. The faster you drive, the worse the spacing. If there is excessive (more than 1-2 inches) sideways play in the rear of the row unit, replace the bushings. If you can spin the disk at all, it is to loose.Ĭheck all the parallel arm linkages. Replace all drive chains box, ground, and transmission. Replace all the pivot bushings in the press wheel weldments. I use Keaton Gold with liquid fertilizer. If it will stay in the up position as it plants, its to tight. ![]() Set the depth wheels so there is a slight drag against the opener disk. There are both JD and aftermarket parts to make more adjustment friendly arms. The originals had bushings without seals and the spacing was set with shims. The arm adjuster needs to be tight so the wheel has no more than about 1/16 of play. ![]() ![]() The edges of the rubber wheels need to be sharp and not cut up. Update or replace the arms and adjusters on the depth gage wheels, and probably the wheels also. Replace the dirt shedders while you are there. Shim as necessary so when a business card is inserted from the rear to the contact point and another from the front to the contact point the cards are 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches apart. You havn't told us much about the condition of the planter, but there are other things that need updated more than the seed disks. ![]()
